Last Expedition is a PvPvE shooter with 4 teams of 4 competing to extract “The Core” before anyone else while trying to survive the hostile aliens resident on the planet Aura. I worked on various forms of the project since its first prototype in 2017 at Certain Affinity through the latest incarnation at Gala Games.
It started out as a 4 player co-op only game, then pivoted to a competitive multiplayer game before it was shelved for a few years. I later contracted part time on it for a short while before it was shelved again. When it was resumed by the 5by5 team with Gala, I took the opportunity to rejoin and was grateful to see it finally reach a state that was playable in the wild with potential customers. Despite the project still being in limbo, it is one of my best game development experiences and I’m extremely pleased with how well the core game loop and mechanics have stood the test of time and how it stands up against the emergence of many other PvPvE looter shooters.
My role was always as a very hands on technical designer implementing gameplay, UI, AI Bots, meta, etc… but also as a Principal and Lead Designer depending on the needs of the project at any one time. The various teams were always quite understaffed, requiring everyone to wear many hats and be self managing.
